Lorna Brady se réveille un matin et trouve un cadavre dans sa maison. Elle ne connaît pas l'identité du défunt ni si elle a une responsabilité dans ce meurtre. En effet, elle souffre d'épisodes de somnambulisme qui ont commencé pendant son adolescence, lorsqu'elle a été incarcérée dans une des tristement célèbres " Magdalene Laundries " (ou couvent de la Madeleine). L'Église catholique envoyée dans ces lieux les " femmes déchues " afin d'expier leurs " péchés " tels que l'adultère et les grossesses précoces.
